Toyota Power Scores Another Top-5 USAC Western Midget FinishThe Las Vegas Speedway Bullring is a 3/8-mile paved oval located in the shadows of the nearby Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The event marked USAC's first visit to the track since 2004.
Zimmerly was aboard an entry fielded by Western Speed, which also entered a machine for series point leader Nic Faas. Cruz Pedregon Racing, owned by the championship NHRA racer, also entered a Toyota-powered midget car, driven by veteran racer P.J. Jones.
All three cars utilize a 166-ci naturally-aspirated inline four-cylinder Toyota engine in USAC competition. Western Speed engines are prepared by Ed Pink Racing Engines, while Pedregon Racing uses engines prepared by TRD.
Zimmerly led the Toyota contingent in qualifying by posting the fifth-fastest time, while Faas was 15th and Jones was 19th. Jones won the first qualifying heat race, while Zimmerly was 7th in the second heat and Faas was 4th in the third heat.
The 30-lap feature event saw Zimmerly race home to a fifth-place finish, while Faas was 14th and Jones 20th.
With his finish, Faas has all but clinched the series title. The 19-year-old California driver has won four events this season and has, with his Western Speed teammates, put Toyota in a position to claim their first USAC series championship with two events remaining on the 2008 schedule.
The USAC Western Midget Car Series resumes competition this coming Thursday (Nov. 6) on the 1-mile Phoenix Intl. Raceway oval. The series will join the USAC National Midget Car series competitors for the Copper World Classic.
